Polar Heart Rate Monitors for Horses

Tristan and Annabel Haskins bring you experience and value with horse heart rate monitors

What do I do if something seems wrong?

Check that the positions of the electrodes are correct.
Make sure that the horse's coat under electrodes is thoroughly moistened.
Check if the electrodes need cleaning. Sweat and dirt can interfere with the signal to the transmitter as can oxidisation of the electrodes after a lot of use. Wash the electrodes with water and soap solution. Dry them carefully.
Check that the cables can not move too much.
In some cases (at about 120 bpm) a double pulse may occur at each heartbeat (R + T waves). This phenomenon disappears when the intensity is increased.
Move away from any increased electromagnetic field (e.g. high voltage power lines).

Irregular or interrupted signal?

Check the transmitter is in the correct position.
With a rider check that the wrist receiver is within the correct distance (1metre/3 feet) from the transmitter.
If distance is decreasing have the battery checked by authorised service personnel.

Blank or fading watch display?

Check or replace battery.

Transmitter belt

Active only when electrodes are in contact with the horse's coat.
Sweat and moisture keep the electrodes wet and transmitter activated and shorten battery life.
Regularly clean the electrodes and wipe them dry after use.
Dirt on the electrodes weakens the contact.
Wash the electrodes with a mild soap and water solution.
Never use alcohol, abrasives or cleaning chemicals.
Material is very soft take and must be taken care of to prevent any damage.

Transmitter Batteries

Average life is 1000 hours.
Use authorised service to change.
