Endurance riding is one of the fastest growing equestrian disciplines. The competition comprises two principal forms of ride : a set speed ride and an endurance ride (or Race Ride).

Under the rules of Set Speed ride, riders are required to complete distances at given speeds and at the same time pass veterinary inspection at the end of the ride. Distances can range from 20 to 100 miles spread over 1 or 2 days. Endurance Rides (Race Rides) on the other hand have a single winner, being the first passed the post and passing the thorough veterinary inspection. These generally range from 50 to 100 miles in length and are normally complete within one day.

The welfare of the horse is paramount throughout the competitions,and horses are subject to regular veterinary inspections which take place prior to, during and at the end of the competition. Competitions take place throughout the UK and between 80 and 90 rides will take place during the 1999 season, each ride includes a range of classes often from 10 or 20 miles upwards

The season runs from March to October. A series of national competitions runs throughout the season open to all grades of rider and horse at both Senior and Junior levels.

The sport is considered to be ideally suited to a wide range of ages and abilities and offers the perfect recreation opportunity for the average rider as well as a top level of competitions for the more competitive. Junior members (from their 8th year) are actively encouraged with a full competition programme including the possible opportunity to travel abroad with the Junior/Young Rider Team. Many families compete with parents and children riding together.
